Publishing with International Journal of Surgery
About the author
Dr. Nishita Gadi is a first-year doctor in the United Kingdom. Her passion for reducing environmental impact and financial costs in surgical practice led her to conduct a systematic review evaluating interventions aimed at improving sustainability in surgery.
Dr. Gadi’s research: Interventions for sustainable surgery: A systematic review
Dr. Gadi’s article, a systematic review of sustainability interventions in surgery, addresses the environmental impact of healthcare. She explains that the healthcare sector is responsible for a large portion of global carbon emissions. Surgery, being resource- and energy-intensive, is a significant contributor within the sector.
Her research identifies 25 sustainability interventions that can not only reduce environmental harm but often save costs. Key strategies include switching to spinal anaesthesia, using less fluorinated anaesthetic gases, implementing reusable materials, improving waste segregation, reducing energy and water usage, and adopting sustainable manufacturing and sterilization practices. These interventions target various stages of the surgical process to promote environmentally sustainable practices.
